He said that to remain competitive organizations need to transform training for this new demographic.

Learning and development will change in 2012. This will be more than an incremental change. It will be a qualitative shift to a new approach.

That new approach can be summed up in one word: performance.

For too long, Learning and Development has focused on its own efficiency. How many courses could the department deliver, to how many people, over what period? And far too often the department physically separated itself from the rest of the organization – in the basement, or even in a separate building.

This will change in 2012, but strangely the shift will only bring us back to the most natural way of learning: from each other, at work.

Here at CERTPONT we’ve seen more and more that a new approach to learning in the workplace can have a huge impact on the success of training initiatives. Guiding learners toward the independent discovery of knowledge as opposed to marching them through prescribed training can pay dividends in user engagement, the creation of new knowledge and the identification of untapped subject matter experts in a workforce.

In our last blog entry, we polled readers to find out what they can’t live and learn without. The votes are in. What tools were the leaders?

Search engines and mobile devices lead the pack, suggesting that people want to be able to look up information on demand, and they want to be able to do it whenever, wherever.

How much should it cost to use a Learning Management System (LMS)?

If your answer to this question is “the license fee”, you might be in for a surprise. Not every LMS is the same, and many involve costs beyond the original license fee. Many disenchanted organizations can tell you that selecting an LMS is more than just finding software with all the requisite features.

CERTPOINT’s latest white paper, Selecting an Enterprise LMS: The Intangible Factors, looks into this in detail. The paper also considers one other vital factor to bear in mind when buying an LMS.

So, what are the hidden costs of choosing the wrong LMS, and what else should you consider?

CERTPOINT VisionaryRecently CERTPOINT Systems was recognized by Gartner as a “visionary” company in their Magic Quadrant for Corporate Learning Systems report. High praise, but the accolade may leave you asking a question.

Just what is a visionary e-learning company?

Gartner’s Magic Quadrant divides e-learning vendors into 4 types: Leaders, Challengers, Visionaries and Niche Players. They define visionaries as “forward-thinking” and “differentiated by product innovation.”

These attributes do describe CERTPOINT Systems, but they only begin to paint a picture of what “vision” means to us.

The fascinating thing about touch screen technology is the intimacy it brings to the learning process.  It connects the skin with the screen at the fingertip. It allows one to actually touch and feel the content, move it around, combine it, tap it to dig deeper, and peel for layers of information behind it.  Moreover, the touch screen has found a formidable co-conspirator destined to supersede lap-tops – the tablet.

Is the touch screen just another fad, or will it alter how we produce and use learning content?

This question popped up recently at the iVentiv Learning Technology Executive Knowledge Exchange in Düsseldorf, attended by forty plus European Chief Learning & Development Officers. I have written about this at length in my white paper Rise of the Tablet – How it will impact workplace performance.

It is a debate which has only just started. We can expect this one to run and I look forward to being part of the conversation.

Effective Use of Media in E-learning:

on

Thanks to everyone that attended our virtual forum on 15th February on the use of media in e-learning. I am thankful to the attendees, particularly for the wonderful interaction we had throughout the session.

During the session we discussed the benefits and pitfalls of media use and a method to evaluate the use of media in our e-learning courses.

The core of the discussion centered on a tool that I developed to help evaluate two aspects of media in elearning. First, we looked at what I termed “media complexity.”  Media complexity analysis allows us to judge media types against each other and determine a relative, weighted score for each media type based on how complex it is to use/edit that media type in elearning.  After that we looked at the instructional effectiveness of media types. The instructional decision analysis allows us to determine a second score for each media type with regard to how they support learning. Finally, we combined these two scores to allow us to determine the media type that best suited our individual organizational needs.
